Through my training and personal experience, I'm able to offer both traditional and modern upholstery.

Traditional and modern are terms used to describe different types of upholstery. Each refers to different materials and techniques used to upholster furniture. Generally pre-1950s chairs tend to use traditional materials and techniques, whilst post 1950s tend to use modern materials and techniques.

Traditional upholstery is a time honoured craft, using natural materials and hand stitching are used to create a long lasting, solid base.  Created from natural, biodegradable materials, such as hessian, coir, and horse hair, it is also a sustainable option, however it is more labour intensive.

Modern upholstery techniques were developed in the early/mid 20th century, through technologies such as foam, which is found in the majority of modern mass-produced furniture. Standard polyurethane (PU) foam cannot be recycled, however advances have been made into producing more environmentally friendly materials that have a lower impact on our environment and our health. I'd be happy to discuss the alternatives available, should we need to replace any foam.

Most upholsters, like myself, work in a continued mix of tradition and innovation, as more eco-friendly materials and fabrics being brought to the market.
